Cách dùng thì quá khứ đơn

• Diễn tả một hành động trong quá khứ đã xảy ra và chấm dứt hoàn toàn.

Ex: I bought a cup of coffee yesterday.

–> Tôi đã mua ly cà phê vào ngày hôm qua.

• Diễn tả nhiều hành động xảy ra liên tiếp trong quá khứ.

Ex: I went to the company, then I attended a meeting.

–> Tôi đã đến công ty, và sau đó tham dự một cuộc họp.

• Diễn tả một hành động lặp đi lặp lại và đã kết thúc trong quá khứ.

Ex: I usually went to the water park when I was a child. 

–> Tôi thường đi công viên nước khi tôi còn nhỏ.

• Diễn tả một hành động chen ngang một hành động khác đang xảy ra trong quá khứ

Ex: Mia was cooking when I came back home.

–> Mia đang nấu ăn khi tôi trở về nhà.

• Sử dụng trong câu điều kiện loại II: If + S + V-ed/ V2, S + would + V

Ex: If I were you, I would buy that motorcycle.

–> Nếu tôi là bạn, tôi sẽ mua xe máy đó.

• Sử dụng trong câu ước loại II (câu ước không có thật): S + wish (that) + S + V2/ed

Ex: I wish my older sister was here now.

–> Tôi ước chị gái tôi đang ở đây bây giờ.

• Sử dụng để miêu tả sự kiện có tính lịch sử.

Ex: Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb. 

–> Thomas Edison đã phát minh ra bóng đèn.)

• Dùng trong một số cấu trúc khác:
  • It’s + (high) time + S + V-ed/ V2 
  • It’s + khoảng thời gian + since +  S + V-ed/ V2 

Ex: It’s time I started to look for new opportunities.

→ Đã đến lúc tôi bắt đầu tìm kiếm những cơ hội mới rồi.

Ex: It has been five months since John sold his house.

→ Đã năm tháng kể từ khi John bán căn nhà của anh ấy.

Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn
